“when i die, i want my cat to eat me.” by Hailey C. Cardenas

let her teeth sink into my papillary dermis,
peel away all of my superficial skin layers.
i have already made space for her—
right between my right atrium and aorta.
pry me open, let the warmth spill.
sink into the red—
the capillaries,
the venules.
you can curl down here in my ribs,
echo your purrs in my superior vena cava,
the way she wakes me up at dawn,
still hungry.
you can feast on me
and even take a piece of my scapula
take it – chew it –
bat it around
like the toys she once lost beneath the couch.
let her swallow me whole,
from arcuate artery to jugular vein,
until i am nothing
but tendon and tendon,
and love.
