In the beginning, there was darkness
Volumes of void in the form of boiling black waters
Blanket to a newborn planet
But then, as if summoned by a voice or a bang
Came light
Down the darkest pits of the seas
On the head of something that wasn’t quite fish
Hear: Here came the world’s suffering
From creature to creature passed features
Until brains that bore thoughts turned lack into longing
And the tight embrace of the deep gave birth
To the urge to emerge
Information passed down from mothers to sons
The search for the sun became call of the flesh
Generational will transformed gills into lungs
Fins into feet and scales into skin
I now stand with toes touching the shore
Dreaming of a fish that dreamed of becoming me
Defying pressure to break through the surface
Only to drown in air
